The Maya city that flourished around 300AD, Chacchoben, translates to ‘The Place of Red Corn’.

Only open to the public since 2003, but discovered in 1972 under a farmers backyard, these ruins were not excavated until 1994 by the National Institute of Anthropology and History, (ongoing).

Climbing Gran Basamento, Chacchoben’s ritual heart offers spectacular views of the surrounding jungle as well as Temple One, Chacchoben’s astronomical hub.  The views, along with paths offer opportunities to observe various species of the local flora and fauna, keep your eyes open for birds and spider monkeys!

After you have explored the ruins, your driver will take you to the beaches of Mahahual, along the boardwalk.  Swim, lounge, enjoy the Caribbean views, get a massage (extra fee), use the Wi-fi or kayaks, and enjoy the freshly made local foods with juices, water, soft drinks and cocktails.

MEETING INSTRUCTIONS

Upon port arrival, exit the ship, walk or take the tram across the dock to the port shopping area, walk through the shopping area, exit the port and walk along the street to the taxi cab hub.  A greeter that speaks English and Spanish will be near the Costa Maya Tours taxis.  Please give him your voucher.                                                                         A taxi will take you back to the port.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Local guides are also available, if you wish to have a more in depth historical experience.  Please bring cash for this, as well as for fees, lunch and drinks. 
 

Please dress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes.

 RESTRICTIONS:
  • You must be able to walk on uneven terrain.
  • This tour is best appreciated by children ages 5 and older.
  • You will need a permit to use a video camera at the ruins. The permit costs $3 and is purchased at the ruins.
  • Tripods are not allowed.
  • Strollers are only usable in the first complex. Beyond that point, there are stairs, roots, and uneven surfaces.
